Off Flux Double Concert – in collaboration with No Hay Banda, Arts in the Margins, Canadian New Music Network and Mardi Spaghetti, an off-festival improvisation programme!
Pioneers of New Turntablism, the Turntable Trio features Maria Chávez, Evicshen (aka Victoria Shen) and Mariam Rezaei. The group weave together elements of musique concrète, free improvisation, noise, techno and hip-hop with instrument building and modification. Each artist has a wildly different approach to turntablism. Techniques deployed to create their dizzying sets include scratching, beat-juggling, sampling and looping, while the technologies include double-needle-head shells and acrylic needle nails. The trio’s compositional aesthetics combine sound sculpture, maximalism/minimalism and sonic destruction. Together, they show that New Turntablism is beyond technique, genre or compositional theory; it’s about the unknown.
Lori Freedman is a 21-century clarinet player. She tours extensively, often sporting 3 or 4 instruments at a time, including the contrabass, bass, B-flat and E-flat clarinets. Continuing to draw from a unique and impressive array of works from the contemporary repertoire Freedman is equally at home performing her own improvisations and compositions as well as music written by other musicians, often specifically for her. Both on stage and in the recording studio, Freedman delivers astonishing poetry to written and improvised music in the versatile roles as accapella soloist, featured soloist with ensemble, and as ensemble player. Her own catalogue of works written for a variety of instrumental combinations grows steadily and, in addition to this already full schedule, Freedman also coaches contemporary and improvised music to all instrumentalists and vocalists alike.
Anyone attending this early concert is welcome to attend a concert for free, immediately afterwards across the street at the Casa del Popolo (4872 Saint-Laurent)!
